Live WebShop FAQs

Q: What are the system requirements?

A: You must have a *PC with high-speed or broadband hard wire internet access (wireless connections not recommended) and telephone access. *Currently, the video portion of live WebShops is accessible only to PC users.

Q: So if I have a Mac I can not participate?

A: Mac users have all live WebShop functionality with the exception of access to the video. Many Mac users participate in WebShops presented in spoken English since viewing the video is not critical to instruction. Mac usersare able to access video on recorded sessions- if you are a Mac user and want to participate in a Webshop being presented in ASL we request that you purchase one of our recorded offerings.Click here for a list of recorded Webshops available for immediate viewing.

Q: How can I be sure I will be able to view a WebShop?

A: We have posted a free WebShop demonstration recording - check it out! Also, when participating in live WebShops you will have the best results if you are on a hard-wire high-speed internet connection and do not have any other programs open at the time you are participating.

Q: If I purchase a WebShop can I have someone else sit in?

A: Not without consent of the Leadership Institute, no. WebShops are intended to be purchased and viewed individually. In the event you want to share a topic with peers we offer group discounts. This policy is in place to protect the integrity of the system. Given the expense that is incurred in providing WebShops any compromise of the system will eventually lead to an inability to provide these professional development opportunities. When you purchase a WebShop you are purchasing the right to participate in the activity individually. In doing so you agree that the WebShop is being used solely for personal purposes only and that all other uses of the WebShop have the express consent of the Leadership Institute.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?

A: We accept Mastercard, Visa and American Express. Checks are accepted for group registration only.

Q: Why doesn't the sound come through my computer? Why do I have to call in?

A: The main reason that audio is provided through the telephone is that it ensures better video quality. Sending audio to your computer means that the audio and video have to share bandwidth, and this would slow down the video transmission. Providing the audio portion of WebShops through your computer would also require that all participants have additional equipment. While it is more expensive to provide service to you using a telephone connection, it is the only way we can currently maintain the integrity of the video.

Q: What if I purchase a WebShop and then cannot get in? Or what if I get cut off during the WebShop? Will I lose my money?

A: In the event that anything happens that prevents you from participating fully in the live WebShop you have purchased you will be issued a coupon to view the recorded version of the same topic at no charge.

Q: Can I view a WebShop with a friend or another participant from the same computer?

A: Yes, if you want to participate with another paid registrant you can view the WebShop from the same computer and audio link. You must, however, let us know the name of the person you will be attending with so we can ensure you both receive proper credit for participation.

Q: Will I receive a certificate to verify my attendance?

A: Yes, you will receive a certificate of completion within 48 hours of your participation in a live WebShop.

Q: How are CEUs handled?

A: We will run a report to verify each person's attendance and then submit CEUs on behalf of those participants that entered their address and RID member number on the WebShop registration form. CEU reports take at least a week to compile and send to our sponsor. From there the sponsor has 30 days to confirm the information submitted and send on to RID for addition to your transcript.

Q: Can I receive CEU credit towards maintaining state licensure or my EIPA?

A: Each state handles this differently but generally speaking any workshop offered for RID CEUs is recognized for credit as long as a certificate of completion can be provided. Please contact your respective state administrator to confirm and find out if there are any other additional requirements in your state.

Forming Partnerships & Creating Healthy Communities

Partnerships

Presented by: Amie Seiberlich, M.A.

This WebShop is presented in spoken English with ASL interpretation.

6:00 - 7:30 pm MT

2:00 - 3:30 pm Hawaiian Standard Time

5:00 - 6:30 pm Pacific including Arizona/7:00 - 8:30 pm CT / 8:00 - 9:30 pm ET

This program is offered for .15 RID CEUs in the General Studies category at the "Introductory" Content Level.

Did you know that one-third of RID’s founding membership was Deaf?  The field of sign language interpreting was built by both the Deaf and hearing communities. Yet as we have strived to professionalize the field some say we have strayed away from these collaborative roots.  When leaders and members of interpreting organizations are willing to examine these roots and look outside of their organizations to the larger community trust is built and avenues for rebuilding healthy communities become apparent.

“Forming Partnerships & Creating Healthy Communities” is about broadening our scope so that we begin to see ourselves, and our professional organizations, as a part of a much larger picture.  By becoming more outwardly focused individuals and organizations we begin to recognize that collaboration with others is critical to our continued existence as professionals and as vibrant communities.

This WebShop examines reasons for establishing partnerships, identifies possible opportunities for collaboration, and presents strategies for building communities.  Participants will be provided with valuable tools to begin collaborating with organizations and agencies with common goals and interests.

This offering is invaluable for anyone serving as a leader in an interpreter and/or Deafness related organization, anyone interested in a leadership position, and anyone desiring to make a positive impact on their community.

Breaking Form: It's a Good Thing!

Presented by: Marcie Murphy

This WebShop is presented in spoken English with ASL interpretation.

6:00 - 7:30 pm MT

2:00 - 3:30 pm Hawaiian Standard Time

5:00 - 6:30 pm Pacific including Arizona/7:00 - 8:30 pm CT / 8:00 - 9:30 pm ET

This program is offered for .15 RID CEUs in the Professional Studies category at the "Some" Content Level.

Do you find it difficult to break the habit of “glossing” while interpreting?  Do you watch interpreters that are able to completely let go of English or ASL form in complete wonder and only hope that someday you will “get it?”

It has been said before that the interpreting process is a difficult one.  Many interpreters find the challenge of attaining dynamic equivalence in their interpretation daunting.  This WebShop addresses the notion of "breaking form" from the Source Language (SL) to ensure that both cultural and linguistic equivalence in the Target Language (TL) is achieved.

Mental Models

July 29, 2008

Examining & Adjusting Your Internal Images

Presented by: Amie Seiberlich, M.A.

This WebShop is presented in spoken English with ASL interpretation.

6:00 - 7:30 pm MT

2:00 - 3:30 pm Hawaiian Standard Time

5:00 - 6:30 pm Pacific including Arizona/7:00 - 8:30 pm CT / 8:00 - 9:30 pm ET

This program is offered for .15 RID CEUs in the General Studies category at the "Introductory" Content Level.

Have you ever wondered why two people experiencing the same event can describe it differently?  Leaders in our organization often experience and observe events and changes in a completely different light than members.  Could it be because the internal images held by leaders are different than the internal images, or beliefs about our organization held by members?

Part III of our leadership series examines Peter Senge's phenomena of "mental models" - or internal images.  In this WebShop we discuss the extent to which what we see and experience is colored and influenced by our largely unexamined and deeply held beliefs.  For example, suppose a member holds a negative mental model, or internal image, of those in authority.  This image consists of leaders as dictators, authoritarians and out of touch with the "average member."  The image held by this member influences the filter through which he or she sees all actions taken by leaders; each action is viewed as an attempt to control and reinforces the member's mental model.

This WebShop will provide tools for helping you uncover your own deeply held mental models.  You will also be provided with simple, non-threatening tools for helping others uncover theirs so that your collective communication becomes more honest, and barriers to forward progress are removed.

This program is offered for .3 RID CEUs in the Professional Studies category at the "Introductory" Content Level.

Mentoring is becoming the focus of much discussion, research, study, and application in interpreting. Its Mentoringbenefits for interpreters are enormous.  It is among one of a few learning interventions that is tailored to meet the needs of the individual unlike a one-size-fits-all workshop approach.

There are several theories, actual and espoused, about what constitutes effective mentoring.  The theories put forth that empower the participants to develop their own goals based on their wants, needs, and desires have far-reaching effects.  Constructing that relationship and the subsequent learning enables a foundation that benefits interpreters in the long-term by supporting them on their journey of self-discovery, self-analysis, and addressing skill gaps in a way that can be replicated for the duration of their career.

This WebShop is the first in a three-part series designed to look solely at the component of mentoring and the benefits of the philosophy of developing independent-thinking and self-reliant interpreters.  The tools of effective mentoring will be discussed, demonstrated, and practiced to facilitate the mentoring journey throughout the remainder of this series - devoted to mentoring.

This WebShop will also address professional boundaries of interpreters in K-12 settings keeping in mind the environment's unique and individual nature. As we all know, there are no black and white answers to the questions we face in the classroom on a daily basis so come prepared to discuss relevant "dilemmas" with your peers!

Self Analysis Tools & Techniques

Special Guest Presenter: Lynne Wiesman, MBA, CI/CT, SC:L,Master Mentor, Founder, Signs of Development

This WebShop is presented in spoken English with ASL interpretation.

5:00 - 8:00 pm MT

1:00 - 4:00 pm Hawaiian Standard Time

4:00 - 7:00 pm Pacific including Arizona/6:00 - 9:00 pm CT / 7:00 - 10:00 pm ET

This program is offered for .3 RID CEUs in the Professional Studies category at the "Introductory" Content Level.

As a predominantly autonomous field, interpreters are seeking (by design or default) ways to assess the Self Analysisskills of practitioners independently, without the need to rely on external people and forces.   Many interpreters are quite adept at identifying challenges in the work produced.  However, much of what is identified is merely superficial or symptomatic and fails to accurately determine the underlying causes for these performance gaps.  Addressing a symptom may lead to short-term change but more likely the root cause will manifest in a similar skill challenge or gap, or be identified as a different challenge.  To be maximally effective, interpreters and those who work with them (educators, mentors, etc.) must work to uncover the root causes of a performance gap or risk addressing a symptom and leave the foundational issue remaining.

It is this crucial step of identification of the root cause that appears to be lacking in the work of interpreters attempting to conduct self-analysis.  Developing interventions or activities to address skill challenges or performance gaps should only begin after the root cause for the gap has been determined.  This WebShop will provide exposure, explanation, and application of a number of self-analysis tools from the field of training and performance improvement as well as those modified from other fields and made applicable to the interpreting industry.  These tools have been developed to support the work of educators and mentors of interpreters as well as interpreters seeking to develop skills and knowledge autonomously.

Part II of our series on mentoring show us that implementing self-analysis strategies with user-friendly tools early on in an interpreter’s education will also provide a basis for a longer-term benefit.  Graduates will be able to work independently to identify performance gaps and systematically and successfully address them as they occur in their work over the course of their career.

MentoringThe 4 M's of Skill Activity Development

Special Guest Presenter: Lynne Wiesman, MBA, CI/CT, SC:L,Master Mentor, Founder, Signs of Development

The third and final WebShop in our series on Mentoring - The 4 M's of Skill Activity Development - will be available in a recorded version only.

This WebShop will be available for viewing beginning September 12, 2008.M

This WebShop is Part III, and the final session, in the Leadership Institute Online Education Series on Mentoring.

In Part I, participants identified performance gaps and determined the root cause; this was critical to developing an effective skill activity to address performance issues, as was done in Part II.  Interpreters need to complete the cycle of professional development!

Attempts to do so can be haphazard at best unless there is a systematic and structured process in place to guide development.  In this WebShop, Lynne provides a framework that builds upon previous presentations in the series to guide interpreters, educators, and mentors to develop skill activities that address root causes and that yield meaningful and intended results.  This is accomplished by utilizing the 4 Ms for guidance: meaningful, manageable, maintainable, and measureable.

This is Part III of a three part series; the first part will be offered live on August 5, 2008, Part II will be offered live on September 10, 2008.  Part III is available for purchase only as a recorded version and will be available for purchase and viewing after September 12, 2008.
