This onsite event spans a two day period and is presented by Barbara-Jean Slopey and members of the Leadership Institute Instructional Team. While spedifically designed specifically for Post Secondary Interpreter Coordinators and members of the post secondary service provision team, this event is drawing interest from interpreter coordinators in a variety of settings.

Topics covered in the online portion of this event include:

  • Independent contractors, staff interpreters or hourly employees - an examination of leadership challenges brought about by the changing face of the interpreting profession (Session 1)
  • Maintaining the status quo or creating change - are you a manager or a leader? (Session 1)
  • Advocating for interpreter needs - working with Administration to provide support for initiatives such as paid prep and meeting time (Session 2)
  • Creating synergetic teams - managing student/interpreter/instructor conflicts (Session 3)
  • Raising the bar - examining new standards of team interpreting and prepping (Session 4)

Community Dialogue Series: The View from the Corner Office

Hosted by: Amie Seiberlich, Founder, LII

Special Guest: Danelle Jansen, BA, RID CI, CT, Legally Authorized CO

This WebShop is presented in spoken English with ASL interpretation.

This program is offered for .2 RID CEUs in the Professional Studies category at the "Some" Content Level.

6:00 - 8:00 pm Mountain Time

2:00 pm Hawaii, 4:00 pm Alaska, 5:00 pm Pacific (including Arizona), 7:00 pm Central, 8:00 pm Eastern

This WebShop continues our exploration of perspectives that comprise the world of community-based interpreting.  While the provision of Video Relay Service interpreting is typically considered it's own arena, the types of calls that are handled in the VRS environment are akin to the situations one might encounter in community-based environments - thus the reason this dialogue is included in our community series.

This WebShop looks at the provision of VRS services from the perspective of a call center manager.  We are very pleased to welcome Danelle Jansen, the Center Manager, Colorado Operations, for Purple Communications Inc.  Danelle currently supervises 24 full time Video Relay and community interpreters, and works with over 70 more non-benefited freelance interpreters.  Her experience as a VRS and Community Services manager provides a unique perspective on managing interpreters across the community-based continuum, however, our dialogue will focus primarily on VRS call center management.

Topics that will be discussed include managing the shift from a community service model of interpreting to a corporate model of service, managing the shift from independent practitioner status to employee/staff status, the challenges and demands the VRS environment creates for practitioners and ways in which supervisors can help practitioners meet these challenges.  Danelle will also discuss the practitioner's responsibility to the larger system that they are a part of, the intersection of community and VRS interpreting and what, from her perspective and experience, makes VRS work rewarding for so many.

Please join us for the second in our Community Dialogue Series; the information shared in this dialogue is sure to provide a new lens through which you can view your work.

Cost: $50.00
